Subaru Impreza and WRX split

The new Impreza and high-performance WRX – two versions of the same car since 1992 – are splitting to create separate models.

The WRX will be a completely different beast to the revamped Impreza – which was revealed at April’s New York Motor Show – with unique components. Our image shows a Japanese artist’s interpretation of the car, as a two-door with a shorter wheelbase and heavy-duty bodywork. Our source revealed: “Every part of the WRX will be unique – even the engine and body.”

From now, the standard Impreza will be Subaru’s fuel-efficient core model, while the WRX will employ the brand’s rally-proven 4WD and a new 200bhp 1.6-litre boxer turbo. “We have developed it from the ground up to win in motorsport,” added our source. “That is why we have focused on weight issues, not to mention a shorter wheelbase that permits faster, more precise turn-in. We think we have a winner.” So although the firm pulled out of the World Rally Championship in 2008, a return looks possible.

Above the WRX, Subaru will still offer a low-volume flagship STi, which will be more hardcore than ever. The maker was able to push the limits with this car because its forthcoming coupe – co-developed with the Toyota FT-86 – will fill the gap for a more forgiving performance model.

The new WRX is expected to be revealed within the next year.

2012 Subaru Impreza revealed!

The next Impreza is getting a dramatic new look. This is the first official picture of Subaru’s Impreza Design Concept, which debuted at the LA Motor Show.

The Japanese firm has already backtracked over its decision in 2007 to reinvent the Impreza as a hatch – it introduced the WRX STi saloon last month – and this concept reinforces its move.

Marking out the newcomer is a completely new design language, called Confidence in Motion – and it’s a big departure from previous versions, as our Impreza timeline (below) shows. The aggressive new front end – with hawk-eye headlights, 3D grille and wing-like foglamps – previews a fresh family face that could grace the new Subaru coupĂ©.

The Impreza has a low and wide stance, while bosses say the prominent wheelarches put the emphasis on the car’s famous symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. The rims also get carbon fins to help cool the brakes.

The interior is as attractive and different as the exterior.

Double stitching and dark blue piping contrast with platinum leather, while a large central touchscreen combines functions for the navigation, audio and vehicle information systems.

Under the bonnet, the Impreza show car features a 2.0-litre boxer engine hooked up to a CVT box. A final production version isn’t due to appear until 2012.

Subaru BRZ

Subaru has finally given us the first glimpse of how its rear-wheel-drive BRZ sports car is shaping up with the BRZ Concept STi, which was revealed at the Los Angeles Motor Show.

The new model is part of a tie-up with Toyota and shares many of its components with the upcoming FT-86. Much of the chassis was engineered by Subaru –  along with the 2.0-litre flat-four Boxer engine – but Toyota's fuel-saving direct injection system will also feature.

Leaked specs reveal that Toyota's model will boast 197bhp – and although there are rumours that the Subaru BRZ could have around 250bhp, company sources wouldn't confirm this.

Visually, the two models boast a very similar profile, but Subaru will differentiate the BRZ from its Toyota sibling with a more aggressive bodykit and Subaru's family face. Every body panel on the BRZ concept will change slightly for production, although the car will look pretty much identical to the one you see here.

Company sources are keen to point out that the BRZ is very lightweight - it's expected to tip the scales at around 1,150kg – and despite a relatively modest power output, it should do 0-60mph in less than seven seconds with a top speed of 140mph.

Subaru XV

Subaru is preparing to unveil the all-new XV crossover during September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The model was previously shown in concept form at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year and Subaru’s designers claim to have stayed true to the look of that car. The teaser shot clearly shows the same blistered wheel arches, prominent grille and headlights as the concept.

When it goes on sale early next year, the XV will go head-to-head with Nissan’s Qashqai and looks set to replace the Subaru Forester in the line-up.  The firm also claims it will bring a new level of “engineering excellence” to the segment.

Unlike Nissan’s crossover the XV will be four-wheel drive only and it will come with a range of engines including an entry-level 1.6-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel unit.
