Infiniti ETHEREA

Called the ETHEREA, it's the Japanese firm's take on a luxury hatchback and previews how a future entry-level model could look.

And if the concept's wild styling is anything to go by the production car will be the among the most distinctive in its class, which already includes the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3 and Lexus CT200h hybrid.

Using an evolution of the established design language, the ETHEREA's front end ties in neatly with the rest of the existing range, but the full-length panoramic roof and curved C-pillar, first seen on the Essence concept, give it a unique identity. Infiniti claims it blends elements of coupé, sedan, hatchback and even crossover into its design.

“ETHEREA is about a new type of luxury for younger buyers,” said Toru Saito, Corporate Vice President and Leader of the Global Infiniti Business Unit. “It is not just a smaller version of a typically conservative and traditional luxury car.”

Do you own a Nissan Elgrand?

The main competitor of the Elgrand is the Toyota Vellfire. These vehicles are very spacious and can seat up to 8 in the rear.

These vehicles are large, giving good storage space as well and they are extremely comfortable too.

There are some great features in this luxurious car, including all round cameras which give you a birds eye view of the vehicle.

The steering and handling are pretty good for such a large vehicle and is definitely worth considering. Does this sound like your experience of the Elgrand?

NISSAN ELGRAND HISTORY

The first generation E50 (1997-2002) was introduced in 1997 as Nissan wanted to compete with the Toyota Vellfire/Alphard in the luxurious MPV class. The Nissan version is larger than the Toyota version which had a stranglehold on this market at the time.

The second generation E51 (2002-10) received a new styling design, with a new front end and some added luxurious features.

The third generation E52 (2010-present) is the current version on the market.

MODEL TYPES

V, VG, X, XL, Highway Star, Rider, Caravan and Homey.

FUEL ECONOMY

The Nissan Elgrand has been available in the following engines: 2.5, 3.3 or 3.5L petrol and 3.2 or 3.5L diesel engines. The diesel engines are the more economical, offering around 40 miles per gallon. Which engine do you have and how does it perform in terms of fuel economy? Remember to think about the engine size, age and fuel type when considering fuel economy.

TRANSMISSION

The current version of the Nissan Elgrand is available with a CVT gearbox. The earlier versions were available with either a 4 or 5 speed automatic gearbox.

Nissan Townpod

Nissan is also at the forefront of the electric car charge – and its radical, battery-powered Townpod looks like it might revolutionise the genre. The concept, revealed at last month’s Paris Motor Show, is a potential successor to the Cube, which could soon be dropped.

It features a clever stowage system that designers believe will make the car the ultimate 21st century family runabout. Key to the Townpod’s versatility are small brackets that look like a cross between a squash ball and hockey puck. These fit into slots around the cabin, and mount load space dividers, storage nets and even mobile phone holders.

In addition, the Townpod’s front seats have been designed with a uniquely thin back. With the base folded up, the rear bench slides forwards and slots into the back of the front chairs to yield a van-like luggage area.

Throw in rear doors that hinge at the sides in place of a tailgate, an unusual twin-flap sunroof to make carrying tall objects possible, plus forward-opening side doors, and this family car really does double as a van. The downside is the correspondingly commercial-feeling high and upright driving position.

However, this is partially offset by the convenience of the stacked two-dial dash. Nissan says in the short term it can’t predict what type of in-car entertainment will win over future buyers so, in a nod to versatility, phones, navigation and MP3 devices can be paired via Bluetooth and controlled by the circular touchscreen. The second screen is for the speedo, rev counter and charge gauge.

Range is estimated at 100 miles, but the Townpod is clearly no sports car. Nissan is cagey about power figures, yet sources say the lithium-ion-supplied motor generates similar performance to the Micra, so expect about 70bhp.

That’s not a huge amount, yet as the unit delivers 100 per cent of its torque from zero rpm, the car feels surprisingly perky at low speeds – proof that, in future, fun and functionality will be more closely linked than ever.

Nissan e-NV200 Concept

We first featured Nissan’s ambitious plan to make a black cab for the UK earlier this year, including details of a zero-emissions electric version.

Now, a year before trials of that get underway in London, we’ve been behind the wheel of the electric van it’ll be based on.

The standard Nissan cab is due in 2013, but the EV version, the e-NV200, is more interesting. The drive train is based on the Leaf, with an 80kW (108bhp) electric motor generating 280Nm of torque.

Lithium-ion batteries are stored under the floor, which allows for a traditional taxi layout: cabs will have a forward-facing three-seat bench and two rear-facing flip-down chairs. Access is excellent, thanks to the two sliding side doors – safer for pedestrians and cyclists when opened from inside – and the blue-tinted Nissan bonnet badge hides the charging socket.

Behind the wheel, the e-NV200 is similar to the Leaf. On the road there’s an audible whine which gets louder as speed increases, but acceleration is smooth and brisk. Cabbies will also be thrilled to know the taxi will have the necessary 25ft turning circle when it arrives in London.

A 100-mile range seems limited, but Nissan expects cabbies to plug in overnight, quick-charge over lunch (it’s 80 per cent charged in 30 minutes) then return to work. Whether that works in practice will be a key factor in its success.

Nissan Golf?

Well after Nissan recently teased five redesigned models and with rumors circulating that the Japanese brand is considering a sub-370Z sports car, Nissan definitely has its fair share of projects on hand. But that’s not all, as the company recently announced that it will produce a brand new vehicle to compete with the VW Golf, Ford Focus, and Citroen C4 from 2014 onwards at its British production facility.

Very few details about this new hatchback have been released, but it’s been confirmed that in excess of 1000 jobs will be created in the United Kingdom because of it, with 225 being directly involved in the production of the car. The remaining jobs will be created in companies supplying components for the car.

Nissan’s chief operating officer, Toshiyuki Shiga said, “Nissan already produces more vehicles in Europe than any other Asian manufacturer and the model announced today will bring world-class quality and leading technology to our customers at the heart of the European C-segment."

In order to compete with the VW Golf and the Ford Focus, Nissan will have to create a car that can be easily upgraded and modified for future variants as both the Golf and Focus are offered in array of different versions.

Additionally, Nissan will have to develop new systems for the car as there’s no way it’ll be able to recycle all the required components from its extensive range of cars. In saying that however, we wouldn’t be surprised if the new hatchback came fitted with the same 1.6-liter engine as the base Juke, which has already proven itself to be quite capable.

Nissan NV200 Taxi Of The Future

Nissan has come up with a new take on the iconic London black cab, and is aiming to have it on UK roads by 2014.

The car is based on the NV200 that’s already been accepted as New York’s taxi of the future. And the company says it’ll live up to the legend of the traditional cab – the latest version of which, the LTI TX4, is showing its age with its ladderframe chassis and inefficient diesel.

Converting the NV200 for use in the capital isn’t simply a case of painting it black and fixing a taxi light on the roof, though. Vehicles must meet a host of Transport for London legal requirements.

One of these relates to headroom, and was originally introduced to enable passengers to wear a top hat in the back. As you can see from our pictures, the Nissan passes the test.

The most crucial requirement is a 25ft turning circle – allegedly so that cab drivers can make it around the roundabout at the Savoy hotel in one go. To allow this, Nissan had to add 200mm overall to the front track, plus fit new suspension, so the NV200 really can ‘turn on a sixpence’.

There’s also a law that limits the location of the indicators in relation to the width of the vehicle. Because of the new wheelarches, the indicators had to be moved from the light cluster down to the front apron.

Once Nissan had taken care of the 70-plus legal requirements – including fitting a slip-resistant floor and bright sight patches on the seats – it set about making the NV200 passenger-friendly.

All cars have a panoramic sunroof for sight-seeing, plus USB sockets and seats that move back and forth to give more passenger or luggage space. Sliding rear doors not only boost access for wheelchair users, but also stop people opening doors into traffic.

The most convincing arguments for switching to the new NV200 are environmental and financial, though. The 1.5-litre diesel – sourced from the Juke – offers 88bhp or 109bhp and promises 53.3mpg economy and 139g/km emissions. The TX4 claims 35.3mpg and 209g/km.

If all London cabbies switched to an NV200, it would save more than 39,000 metric tonnes of CO2 a year, while drivers would cut their fuel bills by around £700 annually. Plus, Nissan even has an electric version under development for 2014.

A price hasn’t been decided yet, but the standard NV200 is likely to cost between £28,000 and £32,000. That’s cheaper than the TX4 and Mercedes’ Vito taxi – and the new car costs less to run than both.

Taxi drivers may be a tough bunch to please, but Nissan is working closely with them to ensure the NV200 ticks all the boxes. And although the new car doesn’t have the iconic looks of the classic black cab, it seems a good fit for modern London and a strong financial proposition for cabbies. When you’re hailing a taxi in 2014, there’s a pretty good chance it’ll be a Nissan.
